If you want your new college student to be successful financially, give them a checking account instead of a credit card. A survey of college freshmen found that the earlier teenagers had access to credit cards, the less prepared they were to manage  their own money in college. A survey found that one out of four people use free WiFi to do their banking online or make purchases using a credit card.
